WHO ARE WE?

Tar /tar/n. informal a sailor. [abbreviation of TARPAULIN]

The Halifax TARS RFC, operating out of downtown Halifax, is one of the Maritimes' oldest and finest rugby clubs. Established in 1976 as a Men's Club, the TARS have remained one of the powerhouse men's teams in Nova Scotia, winning back to back 1st Division provincial titles in 1992 and 1993, and adding another in 2004. The team also fields a strong team in the men's 2nd division.

In 2002, the club fielded a Women's team for the first time… a team that has had wonderful success, capturing league titles in both 2003 and 2004 and adding significant energy, ideas, and sociability to the TARS family.

This past year, the TARS also fielded a junior men's team for the first time, and we hope to expand this program in the year to come.

The TARS familiar black and blue jerseys have been worn by some of the best rugby player in Atlantic Canada. Many TARS members have played on Nova Scotia's Provincial teams and some members have made it to the national ranks. Our club has always played with skill and determination, and as always, with a lot of fun. We welcome new members, from any level of experience. The TARS continue to maintain a reputation for socializing. We proudly believe that Halifax offers some of the best nightlife in North America. We have undertaken the responsibility of sampling the wares of various establishments to ensure continued high quality. The TARS also host the biggest and best tournament of the summer, the SEAHORSE CUP.

We extend a warm welcome to all who could visit us and enjoy a good match and a pint or two of the Maritime's finest. Please pass info along to your rugby clubs. The TARS have toured to many exotic and exciting places, including New York, ,Savanah Georgia, and Bermuda, and London, England, where we were hosted by the London Welsh. This spring we hope to travel to Boston and in the next few years take a trip to South Africa.
